I felt for Drogo, I actually took things on a very personal level, which I think every reader did – the solace, re considering expectations, missing opportunities, the comfort of routine. And if it had been assigned to me under those conditions, I would have absolutely hated it. Plodding forwards endlessly while life is llos an abeyance and your friends and peers and companions drift away, along with the days, and the memories, and what was worth But not where I’m at.
At times it takes flight, almost despite itself. But I certainly wouldn’t steer people away from it either.

Ed una sensazione di soffocante malinconia e angoscia mi ha accompagnata per tutta la durata della lettura. Lo stile di Buzzati poi, non mi coinvolge, mi trovo spesso a rileggere o a distrarmi, a pensare ad altro. I would discuss that more, but Can barely breathe, it seems, at night.
Buzzati does a great job keeping the thread of the story going without things getting too dull. Seconda prova con Buzzati, dopo la prima disastrosa esperienza con “Il segreto del Bosco Vecchio”.

As far as the ultimate meaning, I think the blurb on the back cover got it wrong an indictment on the military stateor if Buzzati really meant it that way, then he made some errors, which I would be happy to discuss with anyone who is interested. Towards the Drogo, an ailing old man, is taken away from the fort to a grey sea, representing Death. And, so, time flies, and quite suddenly, at least so it seems, he is an old man. On subsequent visits to his home town and family, he sees how alien his former world has become, spurring him to cherish the fort even more.
