The anointment by Oprah Winfrey of Bernhard Schlink’s previous novel, The Reader, offered yet more proof to timid publishers that translation is no barrier to bestseller status.

Another character is fixated upon a mysterious painting of a woman, a painting that had been in the study of his now deceased father, but which he recalls as a source of uneasy undercurrents between his parents. Something in them doesn’t suit me and they generally leave me with a feeling of dissatisfaction.
Let that be a testament as to this book’s dryness and my boredom. Schlink is possessed with hernhard coolly direct manner of interrogating the confused motives of the human heart. I was not disappointed. Schlink, in his unassuming, matter-of-fact way, weaves a collection of stories that involve such a non-obvious tenderness as to first surprise and then endear his reader. Schlink is a very different writer from Alois Hotschnig, and not just in subject matter.
Circumcision was probably my loove out of the 7 stories. The discontent they feel is simply a case of boredom most of the time.

In his book, the Flights of Love, of beernhard short stories, while a bit uneven, he shows that he can relate tales of interest, of introspection, of intrigue, of self-deception, and generally can keep you flowing with his thoughts to the somewhat open-ended conclusions. I won’t spoil any plot elements, so I’ll just mention that I find the final scene of “The Son” to be brilliant and moving, “Sugar Peas” completely unexpected, and “The Circumcision” a very compelling two-sided portrait.
I felt like this short story was giving Lisa excuses bernhzrd being a cheating wench.
My thoughts on “Girl with a Lizard”: Jan 10, Kaloyana rated it it was ok. All East-West stories were love stories, with the same expectations and disappointments.
This parodic stance has helped put many Austrian writers at odds with the state. Why do people do this?
